“Micro Reaction Technology” (MRT) opens the door to fast, safe and economical chemical process mini plants. Plants that while giving exact control of process parameters, also offer improved safety on shop floor.
What is MRT
From outward appearances, micro reactors have nothing in common with their large batch cousins. They are often presented next to currency notes to emphasize on their small size. The actual reaction takes place in the micro-channels. This is where the reactants are inserted, mixed and brought to reaction. The product is discharged continuously. With several parallel micro reactors, the output can be multiplied.

Benefits of MRT
Micro Reaction Technology manifests itself in numerous benefits, which are:
- Overcoming limitations in energy and mass transfer
- Higher purity and better process control
- Fast, safe and economical process
- MRT processes are safe since at any given time small quantities of reactants are brought together for reaction.
- Fast transfer of process from laboratory to plant scale

Suitability
MRT may be considered if you encounter the following:
- High exothermic / endothermic reactions
- Unstable intermediates
- Dosing or mixing problems
- Problems of low selectivity / yield
- Gradient of concentration / temperature
- Tedious purification processes
- Challenging safety requirements

Pilot Facility
Scaling-up of a conventional chemical processes is many times challenging. Although MRT provides capabilities to better manage the scale-up effects, only through piloting can one really be sure. The C³- MRT pilot facility is proving ground and is available to clients who wish to undertake a feasibility study with Clariant’s C³-MRT facility. Once again, the client is protected from major up-front investment costs, while continuing to be protected by a mutual non-disclosure and ownership agreement. The services are charged on a competitive time and material basis.
Leased Manufacture
For a limited period of time, MRT pilot facility can be leased out for the short-term production of speciality chemicals developed using MRT, thereby reducing time to market. |
